LAWN RENOVATION SERVICES IN ESSEX & SUFFOLK
Hot, dry summers and heavy footfall can leave a lawn dry, thin and patchy. Renovation is one of the most effective ways to bring a tired lawn back to health, ready for the seasons ahead.
Lawn renovation is undertaken in early spring or early autumn, when conditions are best for new grass to establish. We provide a free lawn analysis to assess your lawn and discuss the right course of action before booking your renovation.
We carry out lawn renovation for homes and businesses across in Ipswich, Woodbridge and Colchester and the surrounding areas of Suffolk and Essex, working from our bases in Claydon and Brantham.

Before Renovation
PREPARATION FOR LAWN RENOVATION
If your lawn feels dry and rain is unlikely, if you are able (subject to any water restrictions in force) start building a reserve of water in the soil by running a sprinkler for an hour or two a day for several days beforehand. It also helps to clear the lawn of debris and cut the grass as short as possible before renovation begins.
What’s included
Where renovation is recommended, we start by scarifying the lawn to remove thatch and moss, then rake up and clear away the debris. We then overseed with a high-quality grass seed, apply a feed, and finish with a topdressing of fine screened loam, sharp sand and peat substitute, this is luted (raked) into the surface to help the new seed establish. Note that this process doesn’t include aeration: the ground is typically still too hard for it in autumn, so we treat that as a separate job later in the year, usually January or February, for lawns that would benefit from it.
Caring for your newly renovated lawn
Most lawns show visible results within 4 to 8 weeks, depending on rainfall and how well the new seed is watered during germination. The ground needs to stay moist while the seed establishes, with limited use of the area until germination is well underway. Once established, cut on a higher setting to begin with, lowering it gradually as the lawn regenerates.

Before & After Lawn Renovation
This lawn renovation in Little Bentley shows the stages with our team at work. Here an 800m² lawn renovation was completed over 2 days by a 5-person team. We scarified and raked up the debris to clear the lawn, then overseeded, fed, topdressed and luted the dressing into the surface.

What our customers say
Excellent Restoration
Back in May, my lawn was an absolute mess with big, muddy bare patches where I’d suffered some kind of infection, insect attack, blight etc Greengrass came and made a quick plan of action of how to treat, restore and care for my lawn. Well, what can I say, their work has fully resolved everything, and in fact the lawn is better than when it was first laid 3 years ago. Very tidy workers, extremely helpful and good vfm. Highly recommended, 5*
Great service from Greengrass
Nick’s team (Sean and Matt) came and removed the substandard lawn laid previously by our builders. They then added topsoil and turf to give us a super flat high quality lawn. They were friendly and very professional and kept everywhere clean and tidy. Finished off by giving excellent advice re ongoing care. All our dealings with Greengrass throughout the planning and booking process have been good. Highly recommend.
Hard Working Gardeners
The gardeners arrived at 8.30am and didn’t finish until 4.30pm. During that time they hardly stopped and it was one of the hottest days of the year. My lawn was badly overgrown and neglected and the lads strimmed the long grass before mowing. I had stripes in my lawn for the first time ever and it looked wonderful. They also cut back some hedges that were overgrown and even trimmed one of my trees into a lollypop shape which I thought was great. I’d bought some bark but hadn’t been able to put it down so they did that for me as well. I am hugely impressed by how hard they worked. First rate.

Drought Resistant Planting
A renovated lawn is often just the first step. If parts of your garden regularly struggle in a hot summer, it might be worth thinking about which planting choices could ease the pressure in future. Our blog on choosing drought-tolerant plants looks at some of the options worth considering. No need to decide anything now, just food for thought for when you’re ready.
