Do You Have Leatherjackets or Chafer Grubs in Your Lawn?
Both of these lawn pests can do serious damage – and often go unnoticed until it’s too late. Here’s how to spot the signs:
Visible Signs of Damage
- Patchy, brown or thinning grass despite watering
- Spongy or loose turf that lifts easily – like a carpet
- Birds, badgers or foxes digging at your lawn (they’re hunting for the grubs)
- Wilting grass even when soil is damp
What Are They?
- Leatherjackets are the larvae of crane flies (daddy long legs). They feed on grass roots and can destroy large areas of lawn.
- Chafer grubs are the larvae of chafer beetles. They’re white, C-shaped, and also feast on roots, leading to turf damage and dieback.
Try the Soak Test
Not sure if you have them? Here’s a simple DIY test:
- Soak a patch of lawn with water in the evening.
- Cover it overnight with a black bin liner or piece of carpet.
- Lift it in the morning – if grubs are present, they’ll rise to the surface.
